How To Play

Start

If playing with 7+ players, refer to the multiple judges section.

Everyone starts out with 8 cue cards (Ex: Tacos, Sauna, Nanotechnology, etc.)

Judge starts the round by choosing a topic and spins the wheel to determine both the judge’s question and whether the round will be individual or in teams.

Pitchers get 1 min to come up with a pitch idea that falls within that topic.

Starting from the left, each player gets 60 seconds* to pitch using at least 2 of the cue card words, and leaving time to address the judge’s question at the end.

*90 seconds total if pitching in teams.

Judge(s) then choose which pitch they like the most.

Winning pitcher(s) receive $220k +$20k for however many total cue cards are used.

Players then rotate judge's position and swap out only the cue cards they've used.

End

First to $1M in total funding wins. Their largest investor is also considered a winner symbolically.

Full Rules

Before the Game:

  • Each person is issued 8 cue cards.
  • Cue cards are swapped out only when played. However, you can choose to swap all 8 at the start of any round (prior to the Judge’s Prompt).
  • If you have more than 6 people playing, refer to Multiple Judges section.
  • Judge(s) will start off each round with a pitch subject. The judge(s) can choose from the Judge’s Prompt or make up a subject on their own.
  • Judge(s) will then spin dial to determine the Judge’s Question that each pitcher should address in their pitch.
    • If playing with more than 4 players, this dial also dictates whether the round will be played as individuals or in teams (refer to Team Mode section).
    • If spinner lands on a question that calls on a target demo (X), the judge should choose from the People X pile and share face up for pitchers to address in their pitches.
    • If spinner lands on Pitch Black, there will be no beginning brainstorm minute and pitchers will play “off the cuff” without seeing cards in advance of their turn.
    • If spinner lands on Pitch Perfect, judge will guess after each pitch which cards were used. Judge will get $20k per pitch if the judge can guess exactly which cards were used (no more, no less). If playing with multiple judges, both will guess and be rewarded individually. The same applies for the Recapitchulate round.

Pitch Round:

  • Pitchers gets up to 60 seconds at the beginning of each round to brainstorm.
  • Round goes clockwise, with the person to the judge’s left starting first.
  • Each pitch will be timed for 60 seconds. Pitchers should allocate approx. 45 seconds for the pitch and 15 seconds for the Judge’s Question. You can use a phone timer (recommended) or the included sand timer.
  • Each pitch must include at least two of your cue cards, where the words are stated out loud and are considered a critical component of the overall pitch. (ex: if ”wind” is one of your words, saying, “wind-powered vehicle” would be acceptable, but “feel the wind in your hair as you drive!” would not.)
  • Pitchers can use up to all 8 cue words should they wish to attempt, but keep in mind that more words may dilute the cohesive messaging of your pitch.
  • The cue card word can be used in singular or plural form.
  • The cue card word can be open to interpretation (ex: fan as in fanatic or fan as in blower).
  • For any words you do not recognize, you are welcome to look up their definitions.
  • The pitch should be a unique or novel idea.

Judging:

  • Judge(s) should pick the winning pitch(es) based on how good the pitch was (however they want to define “good”, but typically on how compelling their pitch was or how likely they’d invest if in real life). Recipients receive investment amounts in accordance to the amount of cue cards used as outlined below:
    • 2 cards - $260k
    • 3 cards - $280k
    • 4 cards - $300k
    • 5 cards - $320k
    • 6 cards - $340k
    • 7 cards - $360k
    • 8 cards - $380k
  • First to $1M (or highest amount at end of game) wins. Their primary investor (i.e. the person that invested the most in them) is also considered a winner symbolically.

Multiple Judges (6+ Players)

  • Teams should try to maintain a reasonable pitcher to judge ratio. Use the following as guidance: 2 Pitchers - 1 Judge
    • 3 - 6 players - 1 Judge
    • 7 - 9 players - 2 Judges
    • 10+ players - 3 Judges
  • Judges can choose the same or different winners for a given round. This applies to both individual and team rounds.
  • If multiple judges select the same winning individual or team, the award amount is multiplied accordingly.

Team Mode (4-12 Players)

  • If you are doing a team round, pitchers will team up in groups of 2. Teams have the option to change partners each round.
  • If there is an odd number of pitchers, then one of the pitchers will pitch individually.
  • During the 1 min planning phase, teammates can only speak for the purposes of selecting teammates, choosing who will go first, and choosing who will address the Judge’s Question-- no other discussion is allowed.
  • Teams will have 90 seconds total to pitch, passing off to each other where appropriate.
  • Teams should dedicate 15-30 seconds of their pitch to responding to the Judge’s Questions.
  • Members of the winning team(s) will each receive investment amounts in accordance with their individual cue cards used.

Pitch Guidance

Your pitch is ultimately up to you but we suggest the following as guidance:

  • Address problem
  • Present solution
  • Explain how it works
  • Address Judge’s Question
  • Discuss if you have time:
    • Traction & target market
    • Your team’s qualifications / backstory
    • Your business model & marketing plan
    • Your exit strategy
    • (No need to mention how much you’re raising for)
